| | | | | | | Patrice and Danielle Soyer, both graduates in Pharmacy from the University of Paris, were specialists in the development and production of maintenance products for contact lenses when they founded the Contapharm pharmaceutical laboratories in 1981. Backed by their savoir-faire and in collaboration with eye specialists and opticians, they identified a problem specific to women who wear contact lenses:Ocular, or peri-ocular, intolerance to traditional skincare and makeup products (including hypo-allergenic ones). This problem affects more than one in two women, has no direct relation to any substance identifiable by patch testing, is often linked to a natural predisposition (skin type, fragile eyes, hypo-lacrymal secretion, age, heredity) or to conditions of modern life (stress, pollution, aggressive products, hard water, dieting, unhealthy eating habits, air-conditioning, smoking).
By combining in-depth studies of eye and skin physiology with knowledge gleaned from biomaterial used in contactology, they came up with the concept of bio-inertia* formulations. Initially applied to makeup products for contact lens wearers, the concept has progressively spread to all skincare and makeup products for those with sensitive eyes and skin.
